Garden design at the gateway to the Dales

Skipton gardens. Honest materials, carefully connected spaces.

A well-designed garden can feel settled from the beginning. In Skipton, DWE Landscapes & Design helps homeowners connect new patios, paths and planted areas with the character of the property already there. We work on small enclosed gardens as well as larger transformations, giving the practical details of access and construction the same attention as the finished view. Our landscaping service covers design, paving, lawns, fencing, decking and stonework.

Choose a material palette with a sense of place

Skipton's cobbled side streets and courtyards sit close to the Leeds–Liverpool Canal, between the limestone Dales to the north and gritstone moors to the south. You do not need to reproduce those surroundings in a garden, but they offer a useful reminder that texture, proportion and a limited palette can create a lasting impression.

If your home has existing stone walls, we can consider how a new path or terrace meets them. A quieter paving tone may give the stone room to stand out; a crisp porcelain surface may create a deliberate contemporary contrast. Edges and transitions should be resolved as part of the design, rather than left as a strip to fill later.

We also look at what can be retained. A sound wall, a useful set of steps or established planting may give the new layout a starting point and keep a sense of continuity. The right scope depends on condition, layout and what you want to achieve.

Let a small courtyard do one or two things well

For an enclosed garden, the choice of furniture should come early. Measure the table you would like to use, allow space to move chairs and keep a clear route to the door. That simple exercise often reveals whether a dining terrace, a relaxed seating corner or a combination will be comfortable in the space available.

Planting does not have to occupy the centre of the plot to make a difference. A border against the right boundary can soften the enclosure and leave the main floor space clear. In a larger garden, paths can connect separate destinations so the layout feels purposeful instead of leaving unused space beyond the patio.

We can discuss fencing and screens where privacy is needed, and decking or a pergola where a separate outdoor room would be useful. Each feature should earn its place through the way it supports the garden, not simply because there is room to include it.

Work out the route in before the work begins

Restricted access changes how a landscaping job is organised. Let us know about passages, gates, shared routes and steps, including their approximate widths. Photographs showing the full route from the street help us assess how materials can arrive and how existing surfaces can be removed.

We serve Skipton from our Whalley base and quote for the agreed work after discussing the site. To start, call 07944 847621 with your postcode, a few photographs and the main improvements you have in mind. We offer free, no-obligation quotes for patios, driveways and complete landscaping projects.

Before you start

Planning a project in Skipton?

Can you work around existing stone walls in a Skipton garden?

We can discuss retaining and complementing existing stonework. Its condition, the proposed levels and the construction needed for the new work must be assessed before the layout is agreed.

Is porcelain an option for an older property?

Yes, it can be considered alongside other paving choices. Colour, texture, edging and the connection to existing materials determine how comfortably a new patio sits beside the house.

What should I send for a courtyard landscaping enquiry?

Send views of the whole courtyard, its dimensions if known, the access route and any existing steps or drainage. Tell us whether dining, relaxation, planting or a more practical layout is your priority.
