Character in every detail

Stonework & garden building

Walls and stone details give a garden definition. They can frame a courtyard, edge a planted area or connect new landscaping with the character of the property. DWE Landscapes & Design offers dry stone walling, pointing, block work and garden building work, with the scope shaped around the site and the role of each feature.

Make the masonry part of the design

A garden wall is more than a line on a plan. Its height, thickness and finish affect views, the sense of enclosure and how the surrounding space feels. We discuss what the feature needs to do and how it connects to paving, planting, steps or an existing boundary.

The material palette deserves attention, particularly beside older buildings or established stonework. New work does not always need to look identical, but the relationship should feel deliberate. Photographs of the house and nearby walls help us understand the setting when you first enquire.

The view from close up matters too. A wall beside a seating area becomes part of the immediate experience of the garden, while one viewed mainly from the house reads as a larger shape. Considering both perspectives helps establish an appropriate finish and level of detail.

Treat existing work on its own terms

Pointing and repairs begin with understanding the condition of the existing masonry. Loose material, weathered joints and movement can have different causes, so appearance alone is not enough to define the work. The proposed approach should suit the wall and the materials already present.

For dry stone walling and block work, the intended purpose also matters. A decorative garden division has different demands from a wall that holds back ground. We can discuss the project, assess its scope and identify where additional advice or specialist input may be needed before a construction approach is agreed.

Put the right scope in the quote

Tell us whether you want a new feature, an extension to existing work or a repair. Approximate dimensions, access details and clear photographs are a useful start. We will discuss removal, preparation, materials and the connections to adjacent landscaping so the quote reflects the complete piece of work.

Where a proposal has structural implications, supports changes in level or affects the building itself, its requirements need to be established before work proceeds. Any necessary design, engineering or permissions should be identified in the project arrangements. Our initial quote discussion is free and without obligation, giving you a practical starting point for the garden work you have in mind.

Before you start

A few useful answers.

Do you offer dry stone walling?

Yes, dry stone walling is part of DWE's landscaping services. Share photographs and the intended location and purpose of the wall so we can discuss the project and quote scope.

Can you repoint an existing garden wall?

We can assess pointing enquiries. The condition of the wall and suitability of the proposed materials need consideration before deciding what repair work is appropriate.

Can you quote for a retaining wall?

We can discuss the enquiry, but walls that retain ground need their particular structural and drainage requirements established. Any necessary specialist design or approvals should be arranged before the work is confirmed.
